Majestic Domestic Redemptions

Being a pretty major city in the US, getting to Pittsburgh is one of the easiest redemptions we can advise you on. Depending on the length of your trip, you may actually find better value in paying cash and going carry-on-only with a cheap flight and saving your hard-earned points for a bigger buck redemption.

If you’re set on it, there are multiple redemptions you could make. A couple of rudimentary searches pulled up a wide range of options. Using British Airways to book an American Airlines flight, you could fly from Los Angeles to Pittsburgh for 20,000 Avios and $5. If you want to spend fewer points, use Air Canada for the same journey for 12,500 points plus around $35.

To earn those points, you could open this card and hit the spending threshold. The card transfers to both carriers.

| PITTSBURGH FAST FACTS

🌉 Bridgerton: Not the TV show…Pittsburgh’s nickname is the City of Bridges, owing to the 446 bridges found within the city. That’s more than in Venice.

🍅 Ketchup on your history: The city is known for its role in the steel industry, but you might not be aware that the food giant Heinz was also founded in Pittsburgh. Finding its roots in the late 19th century, it became one of the most influential companies in the world.

🧑🏽‍🎨 Warhol’s stomping grounds: Famed artist Andy Warhol might be most associated with the hedonistic glamour of 60s New York, but he was a Pittsburgh boy, born and bred.

🥇 First in everything: Pittsburgh had a lot of firsts—the first Nickelodeon, the first polio vaccine, the first heart and liver transplants, the first Big Mac, the first Ferris Wheel, the first US public TV station, the first cable suspension bridge, and the First World Series.

Getting Around

Pittsburgh is defined by its vibrant and contrasting neighborhoods, so moving around the city efficiently is vital for any weekend warriors to PA. Thankfully, there’s a light rail servicing most areas in the city and a comprehensive bus service connecting each neighborhood.

Renting a car would offer an extra level of freedom but adds the stress of driving in what can be a chaotic city and parking costs. The city is also remarkably walkable, so planning your visits to nearby areas of the city is always a good idea if you want to pound some pavement.

The Weather Goes Hard

Pittsburgh gets the full brunt of every season–the good and the bad.

Its summers are hot and humid, so maybe take a miss unless you’re after one of the brilliant festivals or outdoor activities that roar on through the warmer months.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Winter is an icy beast. The city averages over forty days of snow every year, a startling amount for many hailing from warmer climes. That doesn’t mean the city shuts down–quite the opposite, in fact. There are still a ton of things happening during the coldest months, and it could make for a unique trip.

Naturally, Fall and Spring make for ideal medians. The crisp Autumn air is made for Steelers game days, and the warming Spring brings a bloom to the city’s outstanding outdoor spaces.

What are Yinz Doin'?

There might be a few moments when you arrive in Pittsburgh when you find yourself a little confused. Maybe a waiter asks for your order, but instead of asking, “What do you want?” or even “What do y’all want?” you hear, “What do yinz want?”

Yinz is a term only really found in Pittsburgh and takes the place of the collective second-person plural. Very similar to “you guys” or “y’all.” It might throw you off a little when you arrive, but don’t worry, it’ll catch up. It apparently stems from the old Scots-Irish dialect of early settlers.
