But, don’t forget to look beyond the glitz. Under the surface is a bustling cultural fusion simmering with art, music, and an eclectic array of culinary heavyweights all begging for discovery.

Your Guide to the Best of Miami

🍾 What to do

Yes, yes, we know you’ll be popping some bottles in one of Miami’s stellar bars and nightclubs and maybe lounging around South Beach in the afternoon. But the city has so much more to offer. Most importantly, they don’t all break the bank. Here are some of the best things to do in Miami.

😋 What to eat

Miami has its fair share of showy fine dining, but it’s the local fare that’ll win your heart. The city’s diverse population, hailing from the likes of Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti, among others, mean a Cuban sandwich or an arepa is likely to be your bite of choice. Check out everything you need to eat here.

🛌🏽 Where to stay

South Beach or Wynwood? Downtown or Little Havana? Miami is bursting with outstanding hotels in all of its unique neighborhoods. Deciding where to stay will be one of the toughest calls of your planning, so here are a few ideas to get you going.

South Beach Bum for Five Bucks

As is the case with most domestic destinations in the US (especially ones with major airports like Miami), getting there using points is a breeze.

Virtually any card we’ve promoted here in the past is a contender, as you’ll need as little as 5000 points to grab a flight, depending on where you’re coming from.

For example, let’s go as far away as possible–Seattle. If you use United, it could cost as little as 12,500 points + $5. This card’s bonus would grab you three roundtrips at that rate.

If you decide to use Delta, it’s around 13,000 points + $6. If you opened this card, you’re already covered for a roundtrip with the bonus alone.

It’s very easy. But if you need more help, check out Smart Points: The Course.

| MIAMI FAST FACTS

🗣️ What’s in a name? Miami is more closely associated with its vibrant Latin American community, but its name stems from the Maiyami Tribe that once lived there.

🏠 Art decorated: Miami is home to the world's most extensive collection of Art Deco buildings. It’s highly recommended to take a tour specializing in the architectural style.

🍔 Home of the King: No, not Elvis…Miami is home to Burger King–at least in its current form. Before that, it was known as Insta-Burger King and was based in Jacksonville. A buy-out saw the first rebranded restaurant open in Miami with the word “insta” dropped from the name.

🤿 It’s a wreck: Miami has over fifty wreckages in its surrounding waters, making it something of a treasure trove for scuba divers. Its calm waters are a treat, too.

Don’t Spend Too Much Time on Ocean Drive

Ocean Drive is the attractive road parallel to South Beach you’ve probably seen in 90% of Miami’s ad campaigns. While it’s definitely worth a stroll, drive, and a drink, try not to get too caught up in the superficial glare.

It’s the center point of the tourist industry there, and, sadly, many restaurants and bars have lowered their quality while bumping their prices through the roof. There are a few places worth a visit but do your research first.

Also, be wary of any drink specials. You’ll spot those giant cocktail bowls with beer bottles hanging out the edge. Most of the time, they’re running 2-for-1 specials on them. Good deal, right? Wrong. They won’t tell you, but it’s per person, not the table, and those things cost as much as $40. Unless you’re down to drink two, they’re probably laughing all the way to the bank.

Don’t Dress Down

If you’re hoping to hit the town, come prepared. Miami clubs and bars are no places for the sloppily dressed. Part of these establishments’ reputation lies in who is seen there, so strict dress codes are often enforced.

If you’re a little limited in your wardrobe, research the venues you’re interested in. Guys should avoid shorts, hats, and tennis shoes at all costs, opting for a button-up or a nicer t-shirt. Even your sneaker choice could be too informal, so do your best.

Ladies have a little more flexibility but might be denied from some places for wearing flats or too casual an outfit. But, by no means, should anyone hit the clubs in beach gear.

If it’s not for you, check out some of the more relaxed bars in the city.

There’s Public Transport (but it’s Tricky)

Miami’s neighborhoods aren’t all packed into one area, so you’ll need another way to get around besides your two feet, especially in the warmer months.

Driving can be a nightmare, so we’d advise leaving the car or rental at the hotel and opt for public transport or an Uber. Bear in mind that almost all these options still require dealing with traffic–you’re just avoiding the stress of driving in it yourself.

There’s a trolley and bus system, but both can be unreliable, while the metro rail system is limited to specific parts of the city. The best option is often an Uber or the FreeBee shuttle service, which loops around all the city's main areas.
