American Airlines Raises Bag Fees, Makes Changes to Earning Points
|
In a bold move, American Airlines is reshaping the way travelers earn miles and navigate bag fees. With a focus on direct transactions and enhanced loyalty benefits, here's what you need to know:
✈️ Earning AAdvantage miles and loyalty points
As of May 1, 2024, customers will need to buy tickets directly from American Airlines or its partner carriers to earn points in the AAdvantage loyalty program. Basic economy tickets will only earn miles when booked directly with American. The airline announced that it will publish its list of preferred travel agencies by late April.
💼 Higher bag fees
Effective immediately, American Airlines is raising its checked bag fees. For domestic flights, the cost of checking a bag will jump from $30 to $35 when done online, and to $40 if processed at the airport. The fee for a second checked bag will climb from $40 to $45, regardless of whether it is paid online or at the airport.
✈️ International travel changes
For short international flights, including those to Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean, bag fees will also see a $5 increase, now totaling $35 for the first bag and $45 for the second.
💳 Loyalty program adjustments
American Airlines will continue to offer complimentary checked bags to customers with elite status in its loyalty program, premium-class ticket holders, or those using an American-branded credit card. Additionally, the airline will introduce graduated fees for slightly overweight or oversized bags, starting at $30.
