Summer airfare prices are really hurting my wallet. It's a good thing Costco has confirmed that their $1.50 hot dog combo isn't increasing because the only way I'm gonna be able to afford a Euro trip is if I eat there for the remainder of the year. Sure, I might cause irreparable damage to my body by doing so but if I'm gonna be sick, I'd rather be sick in Europe.
In today's edition:
Earn a free trip across Europe from Airbnb
Passengerless flights and BYO staff: Baggage chaos continues
988: The new mental health emergency number
Gas prices are finally going down

Airbnb wants to send you on a train adventure across Europe
|
Airbnb is looking for six travelers to take part in a 19-day ‘slow-travel’ European train adventure.Â
The short-term rental company is partnering with Interrail for its 50th anniversary to celebrate the resurgence of train travel in Europe. This curated Heritage Tour, as they’ve dubbed it, will also shine a light on Airbnb’s new historical homes category. Â
Over the course of 19 days, a group of six will be taken on a historic train journey across Europe while staying in Airbnbs that include a French chateau, German castle, Italian villa, and even a home with a secret garden. The itinerary, which was curated by Interrail, will start in the UK and go through France, Spain, and Italy before ending in Germany.Â
For the chance to win, fill out this form and explain why you and your friends would be the perfect group for this adventure. Applications close on July 20th at 11:59 CET. You must be 18 or older
to participate.

Airlines get creative amid baggage chaos
|
The travel theme of the summer: Flight delays, 8-hour TSA lines, and widespread cancellations. And even if you’re lucky enough to make it to your destination on time, you’ll still have to worry that your luggage won’t arrive with you.Â
Now, the seemingly endless headlines and videos about lost luggage have even forced some airlines to come up with creative solutions — some including flights with no passengers at all.Â
Last week Delta Air Lines packed an empty plane with 1,000 pieces of luggage and sent missing pieces from London’s much-maligned Heathrow Airport to the US. Since then, Heathrow has tried to prevent more luggage fiascos by capping the number of travelers that can come through the airport daily. They’ve also asked airlines to stop selling new tickets through mid-September.Â
Icelandair tackled the problem in an entirely different way — by sending its own baggage handlers to Amsterdam’s chaotic Schipol Airport.Â
For anyone brave enough to travel with a checked bag this summer, consider getting an AirTag to see where in the world your belongings may be.

988: The new mental health crisis hotline is now live
|
As of July 16th, people in mental health crises have a quicker and easier way to get help. Simply call or text 9-8-8.Â
The old 10-digit National Suicide Prevention phone number will remain active but calls will be routed through the new number. The shorter number is modeled after the 9-1-1 emergency line and designed to be easy to memorize and quick to dial in crisis situations.Â
Though the number is changing, the service is not. When people dial the number they will be connected to trained mental health professionals who can assist with a vast array of mental health crises. The lifeline network includes 200 call centers around the country and a subnetwork for Spanish speakers.Â
Mental health advocates say that the updated number fills a big gap in mental health care across the US. Currently, a majority of people experiencing mental health emergencies call 911, which wasn’t set up to properly address mental health needs. Because of that, many callers wait for long periods to get the proper care or end up having negative interactions with law enforcement officers.Â
In 2021, the lifeline received 3.6 million calls, chats, and texts but they expect that number to double in the first year of the 988 number going live.

US gas prices fall 30 days straight. How low will they go?
|
Even as inflation reaches historic highs, gas prices across the US have finally fallen for 30 days in a row.Â
This year, prices soared to over $5 per gallon for the first time in US history. Now, the national average has dropped down to $4.63. While the average price is still considerably higher than it was a year ago, the numbers are projected to continue falling for a few more weeks.Â
The wide-ranging causes of the price drops include declining global demand for fuel and the strong US dollar making oil more expensive elsewhere. Gas prices have gone down in 46 states, with some states seeing prices drop by up to 52 cents per gallon.Â
While this is certainly welcome news for drivers and anyone planning a summer road trip, it’s unclear how long the prices will continue to drop. The market remains volatile and inflation continues to be a concern across the globe.
