🧳 PACKING THE RIGHT GEAR FOR KAUAI

While we know space in your bag is limited, we suggest making room for these essentials.

  • Kauai is rainy the whole year-round, so a good rain jacket is a virtual necessity. The North Face Venture 2 is a solid lightweight option that can be layered or packed into its own hand pocket for when the rain subsides. Available in both Men's and Women's editions.

  • These sub-$15 polarized sunglasses that members of the DFC team swear by to make life easier on your eyes and your wallet.

  • The brand new GoPro Hero 10Black because Kauai's stunning waters and incredible hiking make it an adventure lover's playground.

  • A waterproof phone pouch and floating dry bag for off-beach snorkeling, waterfall hikes, and catamaran day trips.

🌺 KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: KAUAI

No highrises here
In Kauai, no building is permitted to be taller than a coconut tree (seriously). So for stunning, sweeping views, you're going to have to get out in nature – or jump in a helicopter.

Protect yourself and your investment
We recommend getting Travel Protection prior to traveling. It's an affordable way to alleviate the stresses of potential flight cancellations, baggage loss, medical needs, and more.*

Kauai is Hawaii's rainiest island
No matter what time of year you visit, expect to experience at least a bit of rain. It's best to come prepared with at least a packable jacket.

It's almost always expensive
Kauai's lack of tourist traps and its stunning nature each come at a price. To save money, avoid the pricey winter months and plan your trip during the shoulder seasons.

🏝 WHAT TO DO IN KAUI ON A BUDGET
Admire one of the world's most stunning coastlines
At Nā Pali Coast State Wilderness Park, towering emerald cliffs rise from the water, giving Kauai its iconic coastline. There are 3 ways to experience Na Pali, each suitable for different budgets or travel types – by land, by sea, or by air.

The most memorable but most expensive option is to take a helicopter tour, followed by a boat tour to admire the cliffs from the water. If you're on a budget, you can hike the stunning Kalalau Trail but be aware that it's a difficult hike that is not for the faint of heart.

Explore the Grand Canyon of the Pacific
At over 10 miles long and more than 3,000 feet deep, Waimea Canyon certainly lives up to its nickname: the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. There are hiking trails throughout the red rock canyon that range from easy to difficult, though many travelers choose to take in the view from drive-up lookout points.

Soak up the sun on some of the country's best beaches
Kauai has more beaches than any of the major Hawaiian islands, each one more serene than the last.

Tunnels Beach is the ultimate beach for snorkeling and scuba diving in Kauai, thanks to its massive coral reef and lava tubes that give the beach its name. Meanwhile, Polihale State Park and Ke'e Beach provide sublime Na Pali coast views.
🍣 WHERE TO EAT IN KAUI

No matter your budget, there's no shortage of ways to eat well in Kauai.

Served with 2 heaping scoops of rice, macaroni salad, and a serving of meat such as kalua pork, chicken, or fish,Β Β Traditional plate lunches are a cost-effective way to savor the flavors of Hawaii.

While poke has taken the mainland by storm over the last few years, there's still no better place to eat this dish than the place that invented it. Some of Kauai's best poke can be found at Pono Market and Koloa Fish Market.

No matter what you start your day with, you're going to want to end it with some famous Hawaiian shave ice from local institutions like Hee Fat General Store or Jo Jo's.
🏨 WHERE TO STAY IN KAUI
